All eight eyes

Unfortunately I found this spider in my room... fortunately, I trapped it and took it outside for a photo session which it stood still for (as a thank you for not killing it perhaps?). Not sure on the species, but it is huge (body/head = 1" in length). After the photography session it was set free into the woods from whence it came.

Nikon D300s 105mm f/2.8 VR HH + 1.7X TC
f/22
1/60s
ISO 160
Flash

I would have liked a touch more DOF, but bumping to f/32 didn't seem to produce anything noticeable.

Sharpened head, minor crop

Well done!

The nice thing about spiders, with all of the legs, is that they can be effectively used ofr leading lines. This image does that and it is very clear that we should be viewing the sharp face. The highlight in the eyes from the flash is a nice touch.

Thanks for posting.

(ps. Thanks for the email - I've been pretty busy the last couple of days and haven't responded yet.)

Luke:
Yes the eight eyes are sharp with clearly visible catchlight. Is the image size bigger with the TC or does it just extend the minimum focusing distance?

It might be a wolf spider - google that and see if it looks like a match. They're great looking spiders, but not particularly beautiful. They get quite large here in southern Ohio. I've seen them with a leg-circle the size of a saucer, well, a small saucer....
