Photo taken April 29, 2010 at Peveto Woods Sanctuary, west of Cameron, LA. I see these birds often, but this is the first time I've been able to photograph one in the open.
D300, 500mm f/4 + 1.7x tc, tripod
1/400 sec at f/8, ISO 640
Cropped from horizontal to vertical format.
Comments and suggestions most welcome.

A fine image Dave. Exposure looks good, I like the head turn, your composition, the clean look at the bird and the nice detail - esp in the eye. Well done.

Wonderful detail; nice close-up. I'd darken the perch a little to keep it from distracting from the grosbeak.

I agree with Rich. An impressive photo, considering the amount of crop.

Very cool. One of my fav species when I lived in the upper mid-west. Very nice exposure and the head turn is great. Call me crazy, but my favorite part of this image is the great look at the detail on its beak.

A nice image which has a sense of curiosity to it. Like the inclusion of the lichen sprigs and the perfect rendering of the "rose breast"

Stunning photo David. Exposure and detail are spot on. Nice airy feel to this, simple perch and very soft background. Personally, I like the head turn although purists could argue that he should be looking a bit more towards the viewer. I rarely see them, last time it was raining cats and dogs, about 3 years ago - I need another fix.

Very nice work on getting this species in the open like this Dave, I've always found them to be deep into the trees when I spot them. Love the head turn, clear look into the eye, colors and details.

Nice image David. The clean background makes this bird pop right off the screen. Beautiful feather detail David. The rose colored chest is amazing and the whites are spot on. Wonderful detail in the eye, chest, beak and the feet. Very good depth of field here. F/8 appears to be perfect on this shot. Love it!
