This was a horizontal shot, but cropped to vertical. There is a little shadow on his beak, but I was not sure how to fix that. Any tips would be appreciated.

I don't really see a problem with shadowing on the beak Laura. Everything looks very good, but a larger view would be helpful for critical evaluation. The tail sure looks impressive on this individual, but I have never seen one of these in life.

I think the shadow is fine. I like that the new growth on the tree is red like the bird. It really adds to the composition. Very nice. :toast:

I agree with Gary about the tail. I will have to look closer at the ones here.
No problem with the shadow for me.

Regal pose by the bird. I can't really see the shadow, so I would leave it alone.

Nice job for what looks like fairly harsh light, Laura. I really like your composition. You don't say what time of day you took this, but I think I'd stake that perch out in the morning or evening and see if you can get him back on it in really nice light. :toast:

I like the way you've framed this considering the perch Laura. I wouldn't worry about any shadow on the beak either. I like the suggestion Dennis made to try this shot in morning or evening light.

Laura,

The shadow on the beak is a non-issue for me. The reds of this species are a challenge to expose properly, you did well especially when adding consideration for the very light colored perch.
