I love the frost, the light and the composition. Beautiful photograph. I've never been there, but am going next week with Zack Schneff and Adrian Klein--now I'm excited. Well done.

Amazing! The colors look positively unreal... why are there purple patches next to red, green, and yellow? Are there flowers there, or whats the deal?

Thanks very much guys!
Danny, the colors are pretty close to what I saw. The only thing I did was retain some of the coolness in the shadow, while keeping the white balance more appropriate for the highlights.
The Palouse is about a 51/2 or 6 hr drive from Portland.

Chip this is truly beautiful, but honestly I find the colors a little hard to believe. Please don't take this as some jealous stab - because I sure am jealous - this is fantastic! - but I feel if you bring the colors closer to reality you will add to this image. There is visible magenta in the shadows (bottom left and middle left of the image) and the earth on the bottom right hand side has a color I have never seen before. The yellows are a little hard to believe too. Perhaps there is a just slight adjustment, perhaps less saturation, that is necessary, but I think it will bring the whole color scheme closer to reality.

Thanks for the comments!
Christoph-I see the magenta in the shadows and will see what I can do. I think in trying to retain some of the cool tones, it went from blue to some mag. Other than that, the colors pretty close to the real scene. The bottom right hand side is freshly tilled dirt, with new wheat growth and the very first bit of warm sunlight. I experimented with pulling down the sat. but personally just didn't like it quite as much, I might like it just as much with less magenta in the shadows though. These things are all a personal preference though, and my editing goals weren't to necessarily keep this image as close to reality as possible. Thanks for the comments and critique.

Thanks everyone for the comments on this!
Hey Roger-The combination of fresh green and yellow early spring wheat, fresh tilled dirt, a light coating of frost, and warm sunlight created the colors in this image. I kept the shadows cool intentionally, a bit of artistic liberty that reflects how I felt that morning. I removed some of the purplish hues in the shadows that occurred from this in the second posting, and like that a bit more. Having been there, it seems very natural to me, and not something that I created myself, or could create myself. I can totally understand how this might not look realistic to some people though. The image has been edited, color corrected, adjustments to contrast, etc. I posted an article on the PhotoCascadia blog explaining some adjustments I did to the image if you are interested. I hope this answers your question.
