Cigarette?

Sometimes one cannot resist anthropomorphizing! The stem of grass held by those loooooong nails reminds me of a human striking a pose with a cigarette.

Although not so dramatic as grizzly bears or tigers, prairie dogs are VERY numerous in my area and sometimes I cannot resist stopping for a few clicks.

D200, 70-200 @150, iso 160, f8, 1/50, full height cropped to 4x5 ratio

Suggestions welcomed.

I can't blame you, Lon. These guys are too funny! So is your title BTW.
Great image... What's not to like about it?

Lon, your title truly cracks me up, because it fits so well :jump: This is a great shot. Great details, wonderful pose. I'm fond of these little critters myself.

Terrific pose Lon. It looks like he's just finished a meal and was going to pick at his teeth with that blade of grass, but is not quite sure if he should do it in front of you! Very nice.

Photos like this help me understand better how various animals adapt to their environment. I noticed the eyes on this guy/gal and was struck by how their placement gives it a very broad view of it's surroundings. Probably a very important adaption for an animal living on the open prairie.

Hi Lon,

I often think it's tougher to work with these "commonplace" subjects than the charismatic mega-fauna - you certainly have to work hard to capture a "show-stopping" image when your prey isn't what most folks think is dramatic. This is a cute shot - tho' I think I'd go with Neil's interpretation of the toothpick over the cigarette. My only "nit" on this is I think it would have been a little more effective if everything stayed the same except for the shooting angle - a tad lower would have likely improved the background even more and you wouldn't have had the "looking down" feel to this. But that's a pretty trivial thing...

Cheers...

Brad

Lon,

I can see extreme details in the larger version, sharpness is great too. Love the low angle and the title. :toast:

Very sharp Lon, love the details and I also see these guys all over the place and always seem to stop for a few shots. I ahve hundreds of shots floating through my computers of them. I do though agree with Neil's interpretation of the toothpick. I was thinking more country bumpkin with his toothpick sittin out on the porch. Nice shot!

Technically excellent Lon, nicely composed frame.
Love the POV and eye contact, cute expression..
The grass in hand is worth at least two in the bush!
