First, still a bit buzzed from my chance eagle encounter Sunday morning. As I was watching for a GBH I was following, a bird landed in this tree, a good distance away (I will post the original to show a sense of just how far). With only a 200mm lens and a very bright a.m., I wasn't really sure of its ID at first as it was behind some leaves at the time. Then I saw the golden talons and beak, and white head blazing in the sunlight.

A friend who has experience shooting these believes it to be 4-5 years old as the underfeathers are still quite white. I told him, I know exactly where to find out for sure--HERE!

So here is my very-cropped image, I did everything I could think of in processing with what I have to make it as clear as possible on my own. Shot w/ a D-60 at ISO-200, f-5.6 at 1/640th a full 200mm on the Nikkor 55-200 lens. We got down near it where the bird took off, landed, and took off again.

This was taken in Union Dale, PA in the northeastern corner of the state. Eagles are quite strong in and around the Susquehanna River and in the Poconos/Lake Wallenpaupack area... but they are even, apparently, coming back up here--just a few miles from my original hometown. I told someone earlier this year I bet we'd start seeing them soon--and much to my surprise, I did!!

Thanks for looking and your patience with my shooting and rambling story. Larger image is posted, and I will post the original this is cropped from. :toast:

That sounds like a great deal of fun Bill. We have had reports of them in the area here in NE Indiana and my wife and I thought we saw one (straight out wings while soaring) but could not verify. Even that got us excited so I can imagine how this must have pumped you up!

Good capture and great story! Isn't it a great feeling to see one of these where you haven't seen them before! Congrats!
