The embrace
by David Schwaegler
This image is from the wonderful nature preserve in the Mississippi Palisades State Park near Savanna, IL. What struck me was not only the contrasting color but the botanical oddity. The white trillium (grandiflorum) thrives in our limestone based soils and grows in this location by the many thousands. The red trillium however is more common in the acidic soils of the east where in NH it is little more than a roadside weed. In IL it is on the threatened and endangered list. I don't know of anywhere else that they grow in such close conjunction.

Wow, when I saw this, I thought it must be from some garden. To find them growing together in the wild really is something special. Excellent light and exposure control to capture so much detail both of these very light vs. dark subjects. This is also a nice illustration of the opposite directions that the two species' flowers grow.
