Red Squirrel

This is a squirrel form one of the few small pockets of reds across the Scottish Borders. They appear to be getting less and less as the invasion of gray squirrels continues.

It was very early and the light wasn't the greatest, but I'm quite pleased with it.

I love the attentive "ready for flight" look of the squirrel. Well done!

Ron, nice shot of a neat critter. Too bad those grays were brought over.

HI Ron,

I like this shot - I think the pose is great. And your use of a thin depth-of-field is spot-on here - what should be sharp is, and what shouldn't be isn't - it definitely makes one's eye move directly to the head and forelegs. I agree that when one looks at the larger version there appears to be a little too much noise, but this is easily remedied. One other very small (and easily corrected) thing - it appears that you were shooting "through" something in the lower right corner, which lightened the bark here. If the image were mine I would selectively darken that area to make it blend in with the rest of the bark.

Cheers...thanks for sharing this...

I quite like the dynamics of this pose! This is nice as posted and that makes it difficult to come up with significant suggestions, but I can see a couple of very small things. One (and this is a matter of taste and how you might use the image) is that you could apply some noise reduction to the background, Two, given the very narrow depth of field with the ear tufts and nose looking to be in perfect focus, I think i would apply a little additional selective sharpening to the eye and to the toes of the right foreleg. Good work.
