Your photo says it all John. Every hike I take no matter if it's a National Park, State forest or local preserve I can't help but wonder why people would leave their litter behind. One of my earliest memories is my brother teaching me not to litter and that moment has stuck with me ever since. It blows my mind that people travel across the country to visit a National Park, pack their backpack with water and supplies and discard them where ever they might be. Your photo is well seen.

Not only do we destroy the environment, we destroy our bodies - McDonalds and cigarettes!

a sad realit that need not be.
I lived on a wonderful boat in BC and AK for several years in the 90's. We'd spend 5 hours cruising back into the depths of small inlets, and we woudln't see another boat or human for many many miles. When we got back to the farthest point of the inlet, the forest and water looked untouched by human hands. Often grizzlies or wolves on the shore - and also usually some floating plastic crap.
Very disturbing.

This is a nicely executed image of a pervasive and persistent problem, John and Patty. I'm in the final throes of a 6-week trip through the West and Southwest, and if anything it's worse than ever. The national parks are probably best (because they have more staff for cleanup), but even in them I could usually accumulate a 32-gallon bag of trash over the course of a day.
Did you pick this up and carry it out?

Hi Hank, always carry a bag with me, an on some occasions, fill it.

Good Job, John -- both in cleaning this up, and capturing the image to inspire others to stop being so irresponsible.

Yep, a lot of the West is a big garbage dump. Disgusting. Good shot tho, John!
