Kingfisher at burrow

1D Mark IV, 400mm, ISO 800, 1/1600th, f/7.1 Natural light

I tried and tried to get something useable. It was almost impossible to get any eye at all and my only choice was to pre focus and try to time it. In other words I was hoping for some luck. I did have more light which helped. I kept playing with f stop for more DOF vs shutter speed to stop the action. Not sure I ever did get it right.

It was fun watching them all morning though. They are still digging!

Comments appreciated as always.

Peter

Way cool! I actually like seeing the back/open wing view on this. Find a way to light up that hole and this will really shine. Sharon

Peter, this is always my viewpoint while trying to get a shot of these guys, so I can relate. Love the wingspread tough!

That is so cool you found the burrow. One strange and beautiful bird indeed.

All that said great shot!

Very cool perspective Peter, as if one were flying right in trail. Nicely done! :toast:

Cool image, Peter. The action compensates a lot for the lack of eye contact. :toast:

Other than the dark burrow, this is really neat. Great view from the back.

Peter, and interesting and unique shot that is for sure. My only wish for this shot is that the burrow entrance stood out a bit better. You might bring the brightness of the bird down a bit as it looks a little bright and contrasty to me. Just some suggestions.

A neat thing to find, Peter. We found a burrow here in San Diego once too. I won't be showing you my photo though. :toast:

Great wing spread on this guy. A sweet head turn would have made it amazing. Still a very tough capture you acomplished
