Periwinkle

So I hear this is the best flora gallery on the planet? This is my first posting in this gallery, so it is an honor!

This was taken a couple days ago in a small forest off Hwy-1 in Northern California. There was a huge field of periwinkle flowers, and before the hike I told my buddy I wanted to find one against a tree. Rarely do we find the exact scene we are looking for, but to my amazement, 10 minutes into the hike there it was! I spent about 15 minutes getting it with my digi, and my buddy spent over a half hour with his 4x5--burning five bucks on every exposure. Us digital shooters have it good!

Thanks for any comments.

Really nice and sharp image Benjamin, I like the pose in front of the rough bark BG. Well done, and welcome. :toast:

Beautiful image Benjamin. I like the composition and the texture of the bark. It makes a great bg or subject for that matter. I also like the fact that as far as I can tell it's all in focus. I might lighten the viewer's upper left corner of the image a touch. Also I suppose some might have preferred the leaves with less reflection, so I guess a polarizer would have been a possibility. For my tastes though the reflections are fine. Welcome to the gallery. I'm looking forward to seeing more of these.

Hey Benjamin and welcome to flora. Don't want to steal Bill's thunder, but yeah, this is the finest flora gallery on the planet. Now, as for your image, its great. I really like the 3-D look. Comp, color, detail, DOF, lighting are all spot on. The bark of the tree makes a perfect BG for the periwinkle.

Beautiful shot! I agree with a lot of Pat's comments but I'd suggest that instead of lightening the ULC, I'd darken the other three. That's a matter of personal taste though.

Yep, looks good Ben, natural yet vibrant. Regarding the reflections/glare on the leaves, I think they add depth and life - they separate the flower from the trunk.

Hi Benjamin :wavey: Welcome to flora, Great to have you over. :jump: I especially like how you separated the flower from the tree trunk. The contrasting textures and light, elevate the quality of the image. Really well crafted.

You nailed it. Good job. I like the green on the bark complimenting the leaves. F20 was a good choice. :toast:

I lurk on photo.n and their flower gallery...pretty darn good stuff there too. Ha....got keep it real and not shy from a little competition and nervous looks over the shoulder. It's that idea you're never on top...don't get soft and complacent. I like the contrast of this...esp that blue which seems to float off the screen. Nice.... I sometimes like a polarizer to knock out the leaf shine...but in this case the shine works for me...adding a little light to prevent the leaves from looking flat. Yeah at $5 bucks an exposure....it adds up. But then again...if you pay for a new digi every 4 years...that $5 isn't so bad.

Your efforts of pre-visualization paid off. This is very sharp, and the flower
has been well composed off center.
