I captured this female Northern Flicker yesterday while trying out my new lens. There is a learning curve to using it and I would like some honest C&C. Taken with Canon 50D and Sigma 150-500 OS.

Beautiful lighting Clayton! Looks like you are doing pretty well with the new lens! I've been looking at the 150-500 too... Do you like it?

Thanks everyone. Cam, I justed started shooting with it yesterday, but so far i'm impressed. It has gotten some glowing, and some not so good reviews. I think some of the people that haven't liked it are not using it correctly. It is a long lens and even though it does have OS you need to use good long lens technique to get good results. This shot was taken with the OS turned off at about 350mm from my wheelchair mounted monopod (check it out at my gallery).

Clayton,
I have the same lens that you just got and am pretty happy with it. However I do not have much experence. I will follow your photos and see if you are satisfied in the long run.
It looks like you are starting off well.

congrats on the new lens, Clayton! you're right, even with stabilization, long lenses require good technique (and high shutter speeds!). This is a very nice looking shot--the DOF is very good, which is challenging with this pose. the bird looks sharp, and with a nice catchlight too! well done, and enjoy the new glass. :toast:

Very nice detail and sharpness, I like the bird's pose on this one and the background helps bring the bird out, well done.

Love the light here Clayton and I especially like your DOF and sharpness. The tension in the pose appeals to me also. Looks like you and your new glass are an excellent match.
