Hummingbird Family + repost

I was so excited to get a photo of the mother hummingbird with her two nestlings. Hummingbirds produce two eggs, two days apart. They are about the size of a pea. I feel the mother hummingbird is a little soft, but I still think it is a keeper.

Nikon D90

ISO400

Comments are greatly appreciated.

Love the outstretched necks and open beaks of those babies. The leaves frame the nest nicely. The lighting may be a bit flat, but what a cool opportunity. I would really like to see this closer to the allowable posting size.

What a great find Laura, I would be absolutely thrilled to find one of these. It looks good from what I can see, but you posted it at a really small size. It would be nice to see this larger. The OOF leaf on the lower right of the frame I find a little distracting but it's not a big deal. If it were mine, (and I wish it was), I would maybe try to clone over it with leaves from another part of the photo assuming this is croppped.

That is an excellent family portrait! I like it better than your first post. I really like the leafy setting and those babies with their mouths wide open are great. Everything looks plenty sharp to me. Well done.

Excellent!
Would it take a larger crop to get rid of the oof stuff in the lower right?
Love the mom's pose and the two babies with outstretched necks!

Thanks for the repost Laura. The larger post looks better in terms of the contrast. I can also see a catchlight in mom's eye that wasn't evident in the original. :toast:

Thanks for posting the larger version Laura. I think you can crop a bit closer around the birds and the nest. A wonderful moment to capture bravo.

A prize winner! The second post is much better. IMHO the photo is well exposed and composed. IF anything, maybe crop out the OOF leaf at bottom right. Thanks for sharing.

very cool, Laura--great to see these tiny nestlings! The larger repost looks much better. If you have the pixels to crop in, I'd take some off the bottom and left to improve the comp (moving the subject off center) and removing some off the oof elements at lower right.

Love the open bills of the chicks, thanks for reposting it large enough to view and evaluate. You don't mention which lens you are using though, I hope it is a long enough lens so that the birds don't feel encroached upon.

If this were mine I'd crop some from the bottom and right side of the frame to minimize the OOF leaves there.

Very nice habitat shot! How luck are you to get pictures of the nest with hungry young.
