This was taken off the coast of Spitsbergen, Norway in June 2009. We saw a lot of polar bears, but this was the only mother and cub we saw.

Nice capture and caption Joan.
Sometimes it is hard to believe these are so vicious.

Very cute photo and a perfect song title to go with it. It must have been amazing to be so close to these beautiful animals that you only needed a 200mm lens.

They show off so well against the white snow and that wonderful colorful water! Well done.

Joan: Great capture of the moment. At first I was put off a bit by the blue cast and still might be tempted to warm this up a bit but it reinforces the feeling of cold. 2 thumbs up. >=))>

Looks like she's hunting; nice capture, exposure and composition. And good choice of title.

Thanks all. It was pretty amazing how close we were to them. The shot was taken from our cabin at the stern of a small ship so we were really lucky and felt safe. The mom brought the cub literally right up to the stern, so I think she was hunting alright - just not for seal.
Bill - on the temperature, I've been struggling with that. If I warm up the picture much more than just a nudge, mom turns an unappealing yellow and the water starts to go green. I accidentally shot this in tungsten - I didn't have my glasses on and I mistook the lightbulb icon for the full sun. But for RAW....

Joan:
I'm amazed that you got this with 200mm lens setting. Nice fit with the song title.
