Double Stilt

Here is a photo taken of a Black winged Stilt here in Langebaan, South Africa. I realise these have probably been posted quite often, but they remain so photogenic.
The smaller compressed file sizes do not do the image justice.

Shooting Mode Shutter-Priority AE
Tv( Shutter Speed ) 1/800
Av( Aperture Value ) 7.1
Metering Mode Spot Metering
Exposure Compensation +1/3
ISO Speed 100
Auto ISO Speed ON
Lens EF500mm f/4L IS USM +1.4x
Focal Length 700.0mm

Thank you for looking and you comments.

I love the simplicity and the reflection of this shot. The larger version doens't look very crisp, I'm not sure if it's from compression as you said or from not being very sharp. Were you using a tripod here? There is probably no reason to shoot this at iso 100, why not go to 200, the increased shutter speed might help with the sharpness. :toast:

Neal, this is a great comp. Simple but very attractive. I like that the reflection is not clean. I agree with Nate, in the larger image the bird does look soft and the whites on the side look a bit bright on my calibrated monitor. It would be easy not to get a sharp shot at 1/800s at 700mm. I really try and stay over 1/1000 when hand holding my 500 with 1.4x combo. Not sure if you used a tripod or monopod, but, again, as Nate stated, you could have went as high as ISO 320 and still had really good results noise-wise and gotten your SS up over 1/1000s.

Hey Heal

I like this image a lot. Very simple composition good exposure, quite sharp. I agree that a higher ISO would be the way to go.

With the obvious good light I would normally use an ISO of 320 increasing the shutter speed considerably

Well done

A fun reflection shot, Neal. I like the simplicity of having only the water for a bg. :toast:

Neal,

I love the simple lines, colors and the pose. Agree though on the softness seen in the larger image. I would think at 1/800 on a static bird should be enough to get a crisp shot so perhaps there was a touch of movement. Would recommend using a higher ISO for avian images.

The composition works very well, with perfect balance between the subject and its reflection.
