Pigmy Nuthatch
by Clayton Musgrove
This is a shot of one of my favorite little birds, the Pigmy Nuthatch. I find them very hard to capture as they are so small and never sit still for long. Taken with a Canon 50D.

I like the pose of the Pygmy Nuthatch you have presented, it looks as if it is trying to make up its mind whether to stay or take flight. I also like the tones of the background and how well the pygmy nuthatch stands out from it.
The bird looks a bit soft, that may be partially due to the larger crop you mention and the shutter spped was perhaps a bit slow for this bird, as I recall they move fairly fast. I might have gone to f6.3 to increase shutter speed which should have gotten this small bird all in focus, but the branch would have been more out of focus, so it would be a trade off. Since the bird's are the primary focus though in avian photography, I would sacrifice the branch being more OOF.
