Red Breasted Merganser

Out the day before our rain and snow was supposed to roll in, so I headed out to my favorite site in RI ( city side ) only to find the little brackish tidal pool filled with ducks, and the pair of swans that I have been photographing for a few months.
This female Red Breasted Merganser was very active and in and out of the water. Correct me if I am wrong with the type.

D300s, tripod, 70-300mm with 2x converter, metering spot manual white balance, f/5.6_1/125_ ISO 200,

Any comments or suggestions,
 Diane

It's a very nice mallard with a very nice reflection. The headturn works well too. Looking forward to the merganser in your next post.

Diane, nice merganser photo with the reflection. The angle is a little steep and I'd like more room on the back but otherwise tihs is wonderful.

Did you mean a 70-200? Nikon's 70-300mm when paired w/a 2X TC wouldn't be able to produce f/5.6

Nice colors on this merganser Diane, if you had been able to get a lower image it would have improved this, along with a little more room for the tail. :toast:

What a day to shoot ducks. ( no Pun really) I was all done and on the way back after a bit more of a walk around the bend and then the Merganser shows up, diving all over the place. All I had was the bridge and my very short tripod. I will check the lens later, you may be right. The mallard and the American Wigeons, along with the Hooded Mergansers were harder to reach. I need to stake out the area a half day ahead to not disturb them.
Thank you all for your comments. I will post a few more later this week.

The merganser is cute as can be. Good look at the mallard, too.
