I shot this photo at Bowman's Beach on Sanibel Island on 1/29/10. It's cropped

Hi, Hilke - welcome to a great forum!
This is a nice first post! Good detail in the feathers.
You were likely set for fliying birds at the 800 iso, so there is some noise here. The shadow shows a high sun so pretty harsh light too - early in the morning or later in the afternoon is usually the best light.
There is some greenish tinge in some of the feathers,so I'm not sure what type of processing you used.
A lower angle might have given you a nice eye catchlight.
Looking forward to more images from you!

Hilke,

Welcome to NPN's Avian Critique forum, the photographers here are a great resource in becoming a better photographer.

Sandy has covered almost every thing I would have covered. I can see a thin halo around the bill of the tern, that should be easy to fix though with careful selection during masking prior to sharpening.

Looking forward to seeing more of your work.

Welcome to NPN, Hilke. Interesting looking tern: funny how the feathers look slicked back on his head. Somehow reminds me of some people I've met! Various nits already mentioned. I'll add one more: the end of the tail is very close to the edge of the frame. Keep posting, enjoy the comments you recieve and don't hesitate to comment on the images of others too. There are always plenty of different opinions.

The technical glitches others mentioned are so small that I don't notice them. I like the setting, and the light sand is a nice bg to a white bird. The overall light colour scheme makes the image nice and spacious. I like it!

Welcome to NPN Hilke and to the Avain Forum, a nice first post. A nicely handled exposure considering the harsh light. Looking forward to seeing more.

Welcome Hilke :wavey: Nice first post, I'd like to see a bit more of a rectangular comp with more room behind and in front of the bird and a little less on the bottom. As Sandy said you didn't need the higher iso in this bright light and that has caused some noise. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work. :toast:
