I was very fortunate this week in that I was able to pick up my new
500 lens! All I can say is HOLY COW! I'm one happy girl!
This is a downy woodpecker from my backyard feeder setup. I didn't even have to sharpen it! Vertical comp cropped to a square. Bean bag from the window.
50D, 500mm, Iso400, 1/100, F5.6 LARGER version posted too.

Nice, Sharon. Great BG, perch, sharpness, and exposure. Looks like the 500 is working for you.

very nice, Sharon, and congrats on the new glass--you are gonna love it! A good setup with a nice bg. The bird sure looks good for no sharpening, but I do think it could still benefit from a little. :toast:

I'll second that, "Holy Cow". Of course the bird is great but I love the clean smooth BG that really makes the Downy stand out. Enjoy the new lense Sharon.
By the way, what did you get?

Gorgeous, Sharon!
The 500's really make a difference , don't they?
I love the perch and the pose, showing the pretty back.
It could use a touch of sharpening, even thought the 500's are very sharp - especially the perch.
Lovely!

Congratulations on the 500, I take it you got the Canon 500L IS, I remember the day I first used mine

This is a nice downy, the 500's bokeh is as good as it gets and this images shows it. a beauty.

Congratulations on the new glass. I like the shot and the comp very much. I think just a touch of sharpening would improve a very strong shot.

Nice one Sharon. Glad you're so happy with the 500 - I've sure enjoyed mine over the years. To my eye this image does need some sharpening but I see in your comment that you've done that on your keeper version. Any chance of a repost?

Sharon,

I love that you called your new lens a "her" and that you bought clothing for her. That really made me chuckle.

Big congrats on the new gear!

Thanks for providing the larger image it helped with seeing the nice details and so that I could say I agree on a touch more sharpening.

Great pose, background and light in the eye!
