Environmental Photojournalism Gallery - 2nd Honorable Mention
Entangled

Barbed wire and wildlife are often a sad combination.

This sad barn owl became entangled near the Sacramento Wildlife Preserve, and died in it's struggles. I'm guessing it had not been lifeless very long, or the scavengers would have found it.

Wow! That's unique and sad. I grew up around barbed wire and have built my share of fences, and seen some sad results. But never a bird, much less an owl.

The sweep of the wings while its face is still visible, and your careful management of DOF and background give this huge impact. The "writhing" stalks all around it only increase the effect. Very professional capture of a very sad event.

A very powerful shot, Sandy. It's sad this beautiful creature met such a fateful ending. Congrats on the EP!

Great shot, very sad. Ive got a long scar down my leg from barbed wire. Word to wise: never jump over a barbed wire fence in the snow, its a very dumb thing to attempt...

A sad image, Sandy. I don't think owls in barbed wire fences are as rare as one might think. I found a Great Horned Owl caught in a barbed wire fence several years ago - still alive. I cut him out and took him to our local raptor rescue. Unfortunately, he was too far gone and expired a short while later. :frown:

Congratulations, my friend, on this honor. A most powerful image, indeed, and beautifully done. How terribly, terribly sad for the owl... My heart hurts for it.
