out of this world

Picture of Canary Springs in Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone National Park, WY (USA). Image made in the evening, in May 2009.

The image was shot RAW, and converted/worked on in PSCS3. I cropped a bit, straightened, and adjusted contrast/colours to be more golden.

Wow, what an amazing place. I am still searching for a dinosaur on the background. I really like the light, the mist and your processing.

I love the graphic quality of the terraces and the dead trees. I especially like the right 2/3 of the image but less enamored of the left 1/3. I wonder about a vertical crop with the white terraces in the fg and the smaller dead trees in the bg...

Great atmosphere in this shot. It reminds me more of a painting i'd see on a sci-fi book than a photograph! But that said its fabulous! I'd like to see a larger version of this.

What a gorgeous place . . . I don't recall seeing shots of it before, at least with a similar perspective. I think you've rendered it perfectly, and I particularly like the reflected light in the fore/midground pools and the bright mist toward the background.

Very nice light, clarity is superb and the reflection in the steps is awesome. I think I'd like some more on top so the trunk on the left wasn't so truncated (pun fully intended). Great shot nonetheless.

Hi Ursula,

You must have timed this just right with the rain/snow melt. Because I was there in late September '09 and there wasn't anything nearly this beautiful. This is a wonderful shot. Aesthetically very pleasing. Thanks for sharing. Michael

The way the layers step up from foreground to background create a very nice depth to this image. Beautiful indeed!

Thank you all.

@Reed (Bowman) - good suggestion/idea, I should try that. I agree with the others that commented that it would do better with a bit more at the top. Got to go back to Yellowstone! :)

@Rick (Goldwasser) - it does look nice printed big, I just sold a copy, printed on Hahnemuhle Baryta, matted/framed, and it looks quite nice.

@Michael (J Greene) - it was made in mid-May 2009, there still was snow around, and the mornings/evenings were quite cool. Spring is a good time in Yellowstone.

Unbelievable place! Woah! those colors and textures are nuts. Compositionally I am wanting a bit of a pan to the left to get the tree on the left off the edge and the tree back right more off center. Great capture

Incredible image! I spent a lot of time shooting Mammoth and know how difficult it can be. This may be the best I've ever seen from here. The golden light is brilliant! I like your crop choice, filling the frame with the most interesting subject mater. Awesome work!

Sorry I'm late to the party. I would agree with Justin that this is one of the greatest images I've seen from Mammoths Upper Terrace. Living here I've have not yet gotten an image like this, but am still working on it. The light is outstanding and the colors compliment the whole image. Nicely done.
