Pastoral Icescape

Nikon D300, Nikkor 70-200 2.8 @116mm. F/10, 1/200, ISO 200.

Freezing rain made for an unusual icescape. I hope I have captured the frigid glow of the ice. Comments appreciated.

The foreground trees are really nice. I think I'd like this better if you just concentrated on them.

The foreground is beautiful, but it gets a little lost in the busy background. Perhaps more contrast would separate them.

I agree, I think I would have concentrated more on those lovely trees. It still does look cold though! Nice.

Looks brutally cold. I like how you show the extent of how much got covered in ice.

This is very nice, but maybe the foreground trees merge too much with the background. This is a recurrent problem when shooting this kind of landscapes. Either you go for a high viewpoint where the first row of trees "float" in the middle of the icy lake or for a very low and close point where you can set the main trees against a nice polarized sky (if its clear, like here). The other solution is just focusing on a more minimalist part of the landscape, getting just the details of a few trees - branches covered with the hoar froast. I like in this image the layering of shadows coming from the side in the foreground, and the image is nice as it is!

I agree, the FG trees are interesting, but the sky is a disappointment

very nice, albert. I like the cool feel of this a lot. those fg trees are wonderful. I kind of agree with others about the backround and sky, would prefer a close-up of the trees but this is very nice as is. fine comp.

Beautiful elements in this scene, looks like lots of photo ops with those frozen trees.

The light is a little harsh, but you've captured the cold scene well.

From my perspective, the strength of the image is in the unique conditions that it captures. I agree that the light could be better, the sky could be more dramatic, etc., but it's nonetheless interesting and well done.
