Sharp-Tailed Grouse 2

Thanks so much for all the kind comments on my last grouse. You motivated me to post another. This bird is common around grain fields in my area. They are a heavily hunted game bird and correspondingly shy.
I like the soft light, the pose, and that the bird is fairly sharp from head to tail.
I cropped from horizontal to vertical partly because of a post in front of the bird, and partly because I liked the vertical comp. But I think the comp is too tight. Adding canvas here is difficult for me. I did add canvas to the bottom of the image, and cloned out an oof bird at the top right, but I am afraid these efforts were a little amateurish.
D90, 300f4, 1/160, natural light, tripod, blind. Uncalibrated monitor.
Comments, suggestions, and honest criticism appreciated.

Nice one Dan - great plumage detail and the vertical comp suits the upright posture and cocked tail.

cheers

The thumbnail doesn't do justice to the intricate pattern of the plumage; modest colours but absolutely beautiful. I like the alert posture too. I agree with Rob, the vertical comp works well, and I don't find the comp at all tight. Excellent capture!

Dan: I like this one. Great detail in the plumage visible in the larger version. I'd like to see more canvas on the left.

Excellent detail in the plumage, Dan. The extra canvas on the bottom doesn't look obvious to me. I do think some more room on the right would be helpful. :toast:

Excellant shot, like the pose and composition. Great detail. Don't see where you cloned out the OOF bird. Thanks for posting.

Dan, I love the pose with the slight look back from that angle and the raised tail. Very sharp and well exposed. I think this is a fine image of a species I love to see well presented like this. Personally, I'd like to see a bit more room on the right but it doesn't need much.
