Fern and Redwood + repost

A few small ferns growing above the detritus of a decaying redwood. I had originally intended to shoot an abstract of the "blocks" sloughing off of the redwood stump -- a jagged and nearly hollow shell that stands about 20 feet high. But as I was looking for an interesting composition, the ferns caught my eye. I had visited this location once before and, despite looking for something just like this, entirely missed these small ferns (the longest is only about three inches). I left that day without taking a shot.

Canon 5D, Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Macro at f/16, 4.0 seconds (ISO 100). This is a blend of four exposures with different focal points to ensure a full depth of field.

I like the composition and all the details in here. Because of that I think that you can go with much less color here - especially the greens are a little tough on the eyes.

Andreas, I agree. I often feel like I'm too conservative with saturation, and I was a bit more aggressive here. The repost should be a bit more tame, though perhaps I'll need to work on it further.

This is a great little intimate scene. All the elements come together perfectly. Saturation looks a bit on the heavy side.

EDIT:
I see the repost, looks much better.

The greens on the repost are much imprived, and you did a good job capturing the detail, especially on the red wood.

The repost brings out much more detail in the leaves as well as giving the image a much more natural look. Overall, a beautifully balanced detail shot.

Beautiful arrangement, Phil, and I like the combination of complimentary reds and greens.

Very strong intimate composition Phil! The mentioned saturation issue looks right in the repost imho.

Beautiful little intimate Phil. I think the repost is better on the sat., but I would leave the original amount in the lowest on the wood chunks.

Repost perfect. What a wonderful study of contrasting colors. I could also see going square with this by cropping the bottom.

Beautiful green on red composition, almost abstract.
