In a Frozen Fairytale

Last week Marc and I snowshoe-backpacked up to the summit of Drake Peak in SE Oregon's Warner Range to await a clearing storm. We camped in the most idyllic mountaintop campsite imaginable, just feet away from the summit, in Oregon's highest mountaintop forest at 8,500 feet. The trees were caked in rime ice; it was like living in a frozen fairytale.

For the photo Marc lit up the tent from the inside with his headlamp during that last minutes of foggy light.

Looks like some cold backpacking and camping Floris. I'm sure being there as the sun breaks over the horizon makes it all worth it.

Actually it was surprisingly warm, just under freezing. That was rather unfortunate, as everything got covered in frost, and subsequently melted, leaving absolutely everything soaked... 10 degrees colder would have been much nicer!

That is the real deal. Winter camping sounds fun.

Hey, nice shot of the ol' port-a-cave in it's native (although usually burried in more snow) environment. I'll have to show this one to Frank and Anni.

Nice, and you even had a shovel with you. I know how it feels when you have to wrap up all the wet gear in the morning - no fun.

Oh my! I love this! The scene, but also the colours, the bright oranges against all that blue! Very nice.
