Fresh Fissure!

OK, this is a bit different maybe, but I focused on the hole in the ice with the interesting cracks leading out from it. The light was OK and hopefully enough to catch the grainy snow/ice. Cropped about 40%, tried not to adjust the contrast or brightness too much and lose the detail. Larger image posted, C&C away! ISO-100, 1/100th handheld, f8.0...

I like the concept and idea. The contrast between the hole, cracks and ice is nice, though I think choosing a more "frontal" (i.e straight above the hole) may have been a bit more effective, just my 2c.

Interesting, but it's a bit too contrasty for my taste. Like Younes, I'm also wondering if may have been a way to "spice" this up a little more with a different composition.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the feedback. Different comp may work better, but straight above the hole would mean either a) I rented a helicopter or b) end up in bottom of pond. Not thick, open water all around. Thanks though!

Bill,

Great find and nice capture. I happen to like the contrast and even more important is that the image is sharpest right in reflecting opening which pulls my eye right to it. It looks like you even have pretty nice depth of field here although I think the compression is causing some snow detail to be lost, but that's ok for me since the image is about the opening in the ice and the star-like cracks.
Nice job.
