Close Up of an Elk

This elk was too close for the lens I had, so all I got were a few shots. This is my favorite of this elk. Yellowstone, West Thumb area.

50D
1/125
F4.5
ISO 200
FL 100

Thanks for looking at my picture and for any comments.

Hi Jack,

Frustrating when the animal can't be made to understand what lens you have with you (and thus where it should pose, eh?).

Looks to me like you had some pretty harsh lighting to deal with here. The shadowed region of the bull look just a tad too cool on my monitor - you might want to experiment with warming this one up a bit. Were you hand-holding this? To my eye the image doesn't look quite as sharp as it should be and I suspect very slight camera movement is the culprit (but this is just a guess on my part).

Cheers...thanks for sharing this...

Brad

I kinda like the in your face elke here, too bad about the harshlighting. I might be tempted to crop this even tighter, your sclose now anyway! :toast:

He is a fine bull and certainly in your face! I see blue in the blacks of his nose and other shadow areas. Either a white balance tweak or a pp reduction in blue will make this better, IMO. Nose to ear depth of field looks good and I like his expression.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. He was a biiiig bull and very confused about what his body was saying for him to do.

Too close for the lens? Too close for comfort, unless you were in a vehicle. Nevertheless, a good sharp image of big creature close up. I agree with Brad that it has a blue cast and needs warming up.
