Falls Creates Ice Art

Sorry, folks, I put in the wrong EXIF data, now corrected below...

Taken the same day as my last post, “Iced,” this is Snoqualmie Falls, WA State, showing off its ice art. In the larger image it is possible to tell many different hues of white- some a little cyan, some a little yellow, and some dazzling white.

D200, 70-200/2.8 at 70 mm, tripod; f 13, 1/20th, ISO 200.

Happy Holidays to all, and cheers for a successful 2010.

Lots of power there, love the icyness too  I like a 4x5 vert crop of the bottom, since it focuses more of my attention on the icicles.

I'm really liking this Catherine, the large photo really shows off all that wonderful detail. Beautiful work.

Powerful image, Catherine. The surging water through the jagged ice looks great.

That's a really fantastic Winter image, Catherine. Water in all its forms (except steam, obviously:wink:). Excellent.

Very nice work. The shutter speed you chose is great, lot's of detail and motion in the image. The ice patterns are very interesting. I can see the crop working, but like it just as much without.

Cold is the word that springs to mind when I look at this
My feeling is that you may have too much or not enough in this? A looser comp showing the more of the falls and environment or a closer shot showing the Ice art that has captured your attention.

Nice capture

Brrrrr. A great winter capture. The larger vision must be seen to really
appreciate this scenic.

Awesome! Glad you captured and shared. This was so fleeting ....and rare. Superb detail and contrast on the lower half ice forms.

Excellent Catherine! What a great closeup of these falls that really shows off the power and the freezing cold conditions. I can pick up those hints of color you mention and for that reason, I wouldn't even consider going to b&w.

I would suggest though, that you get in much closer - get down in there and work those icicles! I'm sure it would be safe!

Great capture!

Wowsers, Catherine! This is great. I like the way you handled the shutter speed. Any slower, and I think the water would have lost its powerful feeling.

Like Floris, I think a crop works very well here. I'd crop down to just above the highest shelf of icicles, removing the darker, unfrosty rocks in the top portion.

the ice cycles are very beautiful and the effect of all of them is stunning.

I really like the contrast between the flowing and the frozen water. Very well composed.

Neat, Catherine. Very dramatic falls. My only thought would be to maybe crop the light rocks at the top.

Very very cool shot. I like your choice of shutter speed and the textures in the ice, as well as the subtle color.

Hi Catherine,
The lovely layers and textures really come through on the larger version. I love exploring all the different layers on this one.....very nicely done!
