These animals are hilarious to watch. I wanted to capture the surprised look on the squirrel's face as it saw me (or the lens) in the hide, so opted for as wide an aperture as possible to selectively focus on the eyes. Most frames were wasted, but I'm happy with this one.

Great photo of one of my favorite group of mammals. I also like the facial expression.

Ian, I'm so glad to see you posting some fauna shots. Your incredible technique/skills that make your avian photos so special also work very well to make this squirrel image quite outstanding. There is almost a 3D effect here as the squirrel's face almost seems to be coming out of the photo.

 Cool image Ian. Those eyes out stand out very well indeed. Whether that is only due to the shallow DOF I am not sure and I would have loved to see this with more DOF for a comparison.I don't suppose you have one do you?

Your choice was successful AND you achieved a wonderful creamy bokeh!

Those guys make me laugh! They always look suprised with thier spiky ears! Great capture with the sharp eyes and the blurring on the rest of the image.

Hi Ian,

Focus where it's needed, and not where it's not. Simple but effective. Well done, again! The whiskers, nose, and eyes pop very nicely.

Cheers...and very nice to see you posting more in the Fauna Gallery...

I love this post. I could drown in those sweet eyes. Nice use of shallow DOF. Beautiful animal with cute written all over it doesn't hurt either.
