Mangrove Magic

Here is one from the other night. I went out with a friend to Boca Chita, and island about 12 miles east of the mainland. These mangroves are the first thing a hurricane or storm might hit coming from the Atlantic. They are trying to grow straight into the coral and limestone rock and have been visibly stunted by these hardships.

The sky was almost clear and these clouds rolled in nicely. The lit up thunderhead gave some nice lightning in the distance later on.

I just re-calibrated to a higher ambient light to allow a brighter monitor, so I am uneasy about the newly processed stuff, but will say the sunset was on the left and a break in a wall of additional mangroves allowed the foreground to catch some sidelight.

Thanks for any comments/critiques,
Paul

Beautiful light. Bob Ross would be proud ! http://www.bobross.com/

Except for the dark fall off on the middle vegetation, (leading my eye out, maybe a bit of dodging) , I have no complaints.

Dodge the left side of the mangroves? To my eye they get lighter as the leave the frame. This new calibration has me not confident of what I am seeing.

First let me say. This image is nice as is. But if it were mine, that last 1% move I would do is this...

IMHO, that whole "chunk" of green mangrove in the top 1/3 could be lightened very slight to keep my eye from black holing. (in house processing term. When your eye gets stuck on a certain part of an image that you don't want your eye to get stuck on, very subjective) I would dodge it, or do this curve and brush it in with the history brush. Just a subtle lightening (small shadow end S-Curve to hold contrast). Thats all.

Feeling verbose today, I guess ...

Thanks for the extra help Matt. I was thinking it balanced with the top right clouds, but yeah it is the darkest part of the image. It may be a bit darker than I want, will be doing a test print for a customer today anyways. Black holing, shuttermonkey....I've been learning so many terms lately. =)'

Thanks again,
Paul

Sweet shot Paul, the light on the foreground is very nice but does sort of set up a disparity between the foreground and mid-ground. The cloud is phenomenal!

Personally, i like it as is, the dark background trees contrast nicely with the lit one up front. Its all about the light here, and i think you nailed it.

The difference in brightness of the foreground mangrove with the middleground mangrove seems a bit odd without reading your description. Then again, if you were to decrease the contrast between them I think that the shot would lose some of its overall interest as there would be less of a connection between the thunderhead with the brighter mangrove.

Great foreground here Paul, and that cloud and reflection are wonderful. I agree with Matt's thoughts too.

Paul,

An amazingly dramatic scene, from sea to sky, well-captured. I like it very much. I am somewhat distracted by the indistinct greens in the center foreground; perhaps algae on the rocks, blurred by waves and a slow shutter? Me, I like the dark cypresses, but (alone among the many admirers of this image) don't like the fg as much.

Great shot.

Cheers,
Chris

I agree with Matt's suggestion; I was actually thinking you could lighten the entire top 1/3, but perhaps his idea is better. Pretty cool shot.

Great light and composition Paul. It seems quite dark to me overall. I love the color of the water, and seeing the textures underneath.

Beautiful, dark moody scene Paul. The foreground tree and center cloud balance each other very well. I would leave the mid ground as is. Beautiful work.

I'm really hating on my imac right now. I just did a test print and it's darker than I want. This stupid thing won't get dim enough w/out a third party app., but then I get bad banding because I am essentially not working in millions of colors anymore.

Paul, I'm looking at getting some neutral density film. That should get the brightness where it needs to be.
The other route, which you should have, is a second monitor for color. Even if it's a $450 1680 x 1050 22". Dell, Apple, Viewsonic, NEC all have half decent ones. That price will get you 96%-98% of the Adobe 98 Gamut. The other bad thing about the imac is judging sharpness for web.

Great light and color. The top is just too dark imo. That would be the opinion of a shuttermonkey.

Paul - I've found, for dark images especially, it's hard to trust even a good calibrated monitor when it comes to judging how bright/dark a print will be. I tend to work the histogram and push as many tones as bright as possible without losing the mood.. it's amazing what that'll get you. I've also always heard mixed reviews regarding the glossy screens and calibrations, from what I recall the imacs are all glossy, right? Might be worth looking into a mat screen..

I love this shot, Paul. It may be one of my new favorites from your recent work. The light is gorgeous. I enjoy the way the reflection of the clouds spills under the foreground elements and helps them glow. :toast:

Very beautiful Paul! Super cool clouds and a very unique scene overall. It's a tad bit dark, but that adds to the drama.

Really special Paul,

I love how you composed this shot and this is definitely your style. The fg mangrove is a nice attention grabber and of course the sky is wonderful as well. Im not sure about the lightening of the mid ground maybe something to test out for yourself. I do think it matches nicely with the dark sky.
Wonderful job and thanks for sharing

So lovely and comfortable to watch Paul. The light on the front mangrove makes the scene together with the beautiful sky. A quite moody picture that I would like to have on canvas in my living room. Great shot. :toast:
