Ibis Family Portrait

It was almost posed. Why they all looked at precisely the same angle is probably more the luck of the draw. Anyway, I like it. There are some flaws in the image, which I am sure someone will point out, but I learn by doing and by your comments. Thanks in advance for any critique/comment.

f/7.1, 1/640, ISO 400, D300 w 80-400mm VR @ 400mm, -1/3 EV, HH. 90% of full frame. PP in LR2 & CS4

Really nice group shot Phil - the head turn is perfect as is the dof. My only suggestion is to possibly play with the longer stem above the top bird's head.

cheers

Phil,

I enjoy the grouping/spacing of the Ibis and I like how they all have their heads turned in the same general direction. l also like how they are almost a "stair step" up the mound of vegetation they are on.

Quite a few of the whites are blown and that is an issue I would address. Also more dof to get the bird in front as in focus as the rest would have made this a stronger image.

Fine looking quintet all posing for the camera, they collectively create a nice diagonal. I like the height differences in the group as well. Whites look pretty good to me, but a slightly lower exposure would have been perfect.

I knew about the focus on the closest of course, and what could have been done to avoid it. The following will take care of the blown out whites. That slipped by me.

Nice image, Phil! I like how the birds are stairstepped, and the similar position of the birds heads. Nits noted, and I think that long straight branch/tree above the birds could very easily be cloned out, as it competes for attention.

Neat group shot, Phil. I like the way they line up and the fact that they are all looking in the same direction. It really comes across well in the larger version. The dof has been mentioned. :toast:

Here are further modifications. The selective sharpening of the whites and some slight overall darkening of the darks made sense. Vignetting—no. Nor will I clone out the stick above the ibises, mainly because it just doesn't bother me. As far as TK luminosity masks, they were used on all 3, but they were used to add vibrance and sharpness to this, the last repost.

Phil, the only "flaw" to me is that they're in the environment they choose, all too often a bit cluttered and uncooperative, which we all know from experience. A little softer light would help, but it's a fine shot with them all in a similar posture.
