Spider Eye Seal Grass

by Larry Fischer

Gallery: Weekly ChallengePosted December 10, 200936 views5 comments
A fictitious name for what appears to me to be a seal's profile created by the bent grass with a spider forming the eye. The placcid waters reveals the "stillness" of the moment.

D300, 18-200 Nikkor, 2 sec., 1/13, ISO did not record on metadata.

The top half of the shot is fantastic (especially the spider!) The bottom half just confuses the heck out of me. Maybe thats intentional.

I guess Stan is saying, "Crop, crop crop"???
This was taken next to water at o'dark'thirty and the bottome is the source of stillness as manifest in the calm water and the support for the upper portion.
Stan is a great photographer so I guess I muffed this one. I didn't think the upper portion fit the "theme" by itself.

Ok, i see what your saying, Larry. To be a little more clear, really the only thing that bothers me here is the center darkest portion--it makes it difficult to make out the grasses and really splits the shot in two. I think you probably could remedy that pretty easily, assuming you shot this in RAW, which is an absolute must IMO, and you dont mind using Photoshop. If so, i'd bring up the exposure for the darkest area or use a little fill light, so you can make out at least a tiny hint of detail in the darkest portion. Personally, id blend the two shots using a luminosity mask or some similar method. Then, more importantly, id dodge the brighter areas of the grass so that it stands out a bit more against the dark bg. I think theres a lot of potential here--could be really great completely uncropped! Incidentally, I would never want anyone to think my suggestions are better than anyone elses or set in stone--photography aint a science and really the bottom line is whether the photographer is satisfied with the result. My favorite photos are often the ones that gather dust somewhere, while my least favs end up the contest-winners. So, your best move might be to do the opposite of anything i suggest

Thanks for the extended comment, Stan. Part of NPN's benefit is getting good information from experts like yourself.
I don't have PhotoShop, only Nikon's NX2
I guess silhouettes are not too popular.
When I get PhotoShop I'll try to improve this.
I always shoot RAW so eventually it will be a learning curve for all the manipulations you've suggested.
And I don't for a moment think this is a contest winner. I just have fun.
Kindest regards,

Interesting shot!
Needs some CCW rotation, though, to level the horizon.
