This is the Siberian sub-species of the Euraisan red squirrel. Very active and curious animals.

I love the colors. Those long tufted ears look like our local Abert's squirrel but ours are grey. You have captured a cute penetrating gaze.

What a beautiful squirrel this is Tobias. Those tufts are extremely long. I also like the lighting, the colors and the cute pose you have captured him in. Unfortunately the image does look a bit soft, but that could be partly a sharpening issue. Also the eyes look very dark and unfortunately do not have a catchlight.

Hi John,

So where did you shoot this? Were you in Siberia? LIke the others, I quite like the colours here and those ear tufts are fantastic. I do think the softness (focus-wise) in the image does detract a little from it (especially in the nose region), but it's still a very eye-catching shot!

Cheers...thanks for sharing this...

I see I forgot to mention this was in the Miller Park Zoo. The zoo had obtained these squirrels to help develop protocol if and when the Mt. Graham red squirrel project ever came to be.

The ver crop really emphasizes the size of the ears. Really nice color as well.
