Female Cardinal Landing

Here's a shot from Bill Forbes's property in Amado, Arizona. The cardinals were landing on this perch as they came in to the feeders, so I manually prefocused on the spot, took my head out from behind the camera, so I could see what was going on and fired away rounds as they landed. This was my favorite image of one. The eye was pretty dark so I applied a selective levels adjustment there, it's still a little darker than I liked but anything more looked unnatural. I thought about lifting the shadows of the underwings but any shadow adjustment brought too much noise into the feathers, so I left it as is. I cloned out one branch in the bg. About 60% of frame.

A super look at this bird Nate. The light must have been very bright for 1/5000x at f/6.3, but it really helped stop everything. The shadow areas are fine with me and I love the position you caught the bird in. The BG is great too.

Knowing how fast they move this is great. Great light and I think the eye is fine in the larger version. Nice to know someone else does the prefocus and then pulls the eye away from the camera to trip the shutter trick.

Wow, Nate! My favorite part of this photo is the slight red hue to the underside of the wings. That is really cool. I really like the extended little claws, too. Excellent is an understatement!

Wonderful mid-air extension of the wings and legs, plus I love the eye of the cardinal taking a good look at the perch on which it is about to land...very nice.

It's a beauty. I really like the lighting, and the fanning of the feathers of the wings and tail. BG and perch aren't bad either.
