Immature Coopers Hawk?

I'm working on a project going back thru old slides, keeping only a select few to scan & trashing the rest. Pretty funny to look back at what I used to keep when I 1st picked up nature photography as a hobby 15 yrs ago..Even funnier to see how bad some of my 1st attempts at avian photography were. This is 1 I pulled that I had a little trouble IDing. I think it's an immature coopers but it could be an immature sharp shinned? Any help is appreciated and all C&C welcome.

Kirk,

I would think this is a young red-tailed hawk, the tail isn't right for a Cooper's and the white spotted V's on the scapulars are also some thing I would look for in a red-tailed.

I really like the regal pose.

Young red-tailed. Nice shot, I'm sure you have a few surprise slides that you have completely forgotten about to go along with the ones you're happy to have forgotten about!

I'll defer to the others when it comes to id, they seem to know what they are talking about, I - do not. But I sure like the pose and the way he stands out against the blue background. The centered comp is effective. The head turned back adds a little extra interest. :toast:

Nice find Kirk! The bird looks good and I like the unusual background color. That relatively spindly perch really emphasizes those impressive talons I think

Lovely look-back from this Red-tail Kirk. A Cooper's would have a much longer banded tail and the dtreaking would go all the way up to the neck.

Thanks for helping with the ID..an immature RTH it is. Funny thing is now that I look back I had it in a slide sheet labeled RTH..I just didn't trust that to be correct?
