What a cool crown these guys have, nice detail portrait. I do wish for a little more life in the eyes - perhaps you can eek some out of the raw?

Beautiful head shot. Wish I could see the eyes.

What a wonderful shot! Colors, comp, detail...all wonderful. Do wish we for more life in the eyes, too.

I go along with all the comments so far. The eyes are so important especially in a portrait like this.

Very nicely done Neil. I don't know anything about this species, but it looks like they have markedly developed eyelids and long eyelashes, so getting a catchlight could be a challenge under even ideal circumstances I'm speculating. Where was this taken? If this is a captive bird perhaps even using a reflector of some sort would help with the eye, it's such a stunning image.

Hello All!
No, Gary this is not a captive bird.
It was shot in Nakuru National Park, Kenya. They are very elusive and difficult to get close to.
Even with a fill flash, thier dark eyes and heavy brow makes it a difficult area to get any light into. This female had killed a 4 foot rock python with a powerful kick, that her mate stole and would not share with her. She was near the road, which in Nakuru NP, you are not allowed to drive off of. This was taken on my third year of trying to get a good shot of this species and unfortunatly this is as good as I shot.
That was the first year I started shooting a digital camera (jpg sRGB yikes) and I was going back and forth between digital and film. I'm currently revisiting these older files to see what I can do to them with my deeper knowldge of digital. They continue to improve, but I realize the limits of what can be done. I'm enjoying the exercise! Some of my Fauna post are from the same period. My education continues!
Thanks
Neil
