Foggy Autumn Afternoon

Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. What I love most about Autumn is that I can shoot fall colors on overcast days, in midday - in fact, those are the conditions you are hoping for! This was a scene captured along the McCarthy Road.

C&C appreciated. Hopefully the low clouds/fog makes this a little less cliche'. Web compression is hurting this one, so Please See LARGER VERSION for best detail.

Also see the 'alternative version' below.

Canon 5DMII. 70-200/2.8L @ 70 mm. ISO 100. f/13. 1/8 sec. Polarizer (I think).

I don't do this often, but I thought this seen lent itself to this soft focus effect, created using Nik Color Efx 3.0. It's hard to tell the difference or appreciate it much at this size, unfortunately

Beautiful shot Doug. I really like the placement of the tree on the left. The outline of the mountains and the fog provide a nice layering effect. I like both posts. Nice colors from an overcast sky to top it all off. Bravo!

I love birches, so this has "my" subject matter. A very well composed imgage, Doug. It works well to have all lines pointing towards the right and also the placement of the larger birch on the left goes well with that.

Looks great, Doug, especially at large size! Great fall scene. The sharper the better, for me.

The larger version is stunning, Doug! You captured an interesting atmosphere here. The monotone background is perfectly placed in the frame and it comes to enhance the beautiful autumn colors. Sublime!

Beautiful fall color and nicely arranged comp. The fog does help, but i wish it came a little further into the trees (not much you can do about that of course! )

great colors and light, doug. yeah, light here is awsome. I like both versions. there´s a lot of detail in the larger version, colors and the mood is great, but the second is nice and dreamy, as I said, I like both. great comp.

Love the gold and other mixtures of color, they all mix in nicely together Doug. The atmosphere is nice too.

Lovely. The quality of the 70-200mm on the 5DMII is very effective here. Great warm colors and details throughout the image.

The warm colors and mood created by the fog are wonderful Doug. Comp works well too.

I really like the bottom of the image, especially the second version. The clouds and mountains are nice, but I wish I could see a bit more of the mountains.

Hey Doug

I prefer the sharper one.

You've reminded me to not be so afraid of clouds. I need to be more willing to shoot this kind of scene.

I might be tempted to play with the clouds here a tiny bit and clean up the tones a bit .. take some green or cyan out - but as no one else has mentioned it, it could be my computer or eyes. :)

The lower 3rd of this image is sublime.

Cheers

Carl
