Great Blue Heron

The park surrounding the Roger Williams Zoo contains some beautiful ponds, marshes, oriental gardens, and wild birds. This great blue was on a rock in such a beautiful setting. The graceful branches, the few remaining leaves of the fall foliage and the moss on the rock made a wonderful color palette. Taken with Canon 40D, using 100-400 IS lens.

Comments always welcomed.

Patricia: Of course I'm not a bird guy but this is just excellent IMO. The environment makes this shot extra special. 2 thumbs up! >=))>

Lovely setting, Patricia. I like the soft feel of the bg, the hues seem to be made for the color of the heron. One thing, I think I'd clone out the pink weed in the fg.

Love the atmosphere in this. The subtle tones and foggy like setting. A personal pref of course, but for me I'd like to see more room on the right.

Patricia, the pink and grey colors in this image are both very different and just gorgeous. And even though the bird is a similar color as the background, your excellent choice of DOF has him really standing out of the photo. Great job!

Patricia,

This is different and I enjoy the demeanor of the young heron in this shot.

I only wish for more space on the right side of the frame and a little less on the left.

A very moody shot, and I like it.

A great feel to this one Patricia. I too would prefer a different comp, but overall super image.

Yes, the mood here is excellent Patricia. Typically I would also prefer more room on the right but unless you have more room there I think too much would be lost if you have to crop more off the left and go tighter to get it. Besides, for me the left side of the frame contributes to the mood. I quite like this as is.

The direction the heron is looking stretches some "rules", but in this case the rules need some stretching and I like the overall effect. The bird looks a bit soft to my eye, maybe some selective sharpening. I like the dreamy atmospheric feel elsewhere though. Definitely a printable type avian image. :toast:
