Leg of a Giant

This is a macro shot of a Giant Tortoise's leg, taken in the Galapagos. I wasn't sure if this should go under macro or fauna, so feel free to move it. I've seen tons of portraits of these tortoises focused on their faces, so I decided to instead focus on this tortoise's skin. This particular tortoise was over 100 years old, and I think his skin shows the wear of all those years. Hope you like it!

Unique! I like the left 2/3ds of the photo—good detail and a sense of depth. The other third is blurred and in heavy shadow. I sense you were in rather harsh light. How much of the frame did you use? If you have more on the left and on the top, you could minimize the blurred and shadowy area, and come out with a better picture.

This the the full image. I haven't cropped anything. I've thought about giving it a square crop, but I don't really like it square.

Nice creative idea Cam. This is why I enjoy macro so much, it gives a whole different perspective on the way people -or at least me- looks at things. The texture of it's skin sure shows the long live it's endured. On second thought it kinda reminds me of my mother-in-law. Again, good job, way to think outside the box.

Great idea, but I do agree with Phil. I like the contrasting blues and golds on the left side though. And it would tell a great story as part of a photo essay.

Great photo Cam. I actually like the OOF dark corner. It gives the image something dynamic and enhances the creative character of the photo. Well done. :toast:

Hi Cam,

No worries about posting this in Fauna - works for us!

I find this to be an interesting shot - and the difference in opinion expressed above (primarily about the right side of the frame) is interesting as well. I have to admit I'm a bit torn on the light and focus gradient - I initially wasn't thrilled with it, but I do see the argument for it adding a little dynamism to the image. Hmmm...after looking at the large image I think I'll go with Philip's view of preferring the left side of the image but thinking the right 1/3 or so doesn't add too much for me...

Cheers...thanks for sharing this - I'll be interested in seeing how others react to this (those yet to post comments)...

I will weigh in with those liking the oof area on the right, for I feel it gives a sense of 3-d depth. Without it, this becomes a more abstract study in pattern.
