I had received mixed feedback regarding the ethics of photographing nocturnal birds with a torch and flash, but either way this image was created at the same time as the previous one.

30D, 300/4L, ISO400, manual mode, f/8, 1/125th, 430EX (EC -1/3) with beamer, cropped to taste. (full width image)

Wow that's pretty amazing. So you really had a black bg? :toast:

I love how the bird is coming out of the darkness. For this situation the exposure of the whites looks pretty good too. That would have to be difficult I would think.

I completely disagree with using this method to photograph birds (especially owls) outside of scientific purposes. That being said, you did a wonderful job not over exposing and the detail is beautiful - but it doens't look all that natural since everything else is black.

A great shot, but I also do not like the method used to obtain this image. The bird's welfare should come first.

Hi
Everything is black because it was captured in the dead of night so there is no sun, except on the other side of the globe if I am correct. So dark, night sky BG it is.

Excellent exposure and sharpness, a terrific shot Akos :toast:

I'm OK with a limited amount of this type of photography, if anyone would like to see my opinion and reasoning, it's in Akos previous Barn Owl thread

A beauty, Akos. I've seen these birds sitting by the roadside at night waiting for car headlights to illuminate an area so they can see even better. (It's one reason that they are hit by cars so often). Makes you wonder if they even care about the light. :toast: :toast:
