Curiosity
by John Kerr
This is one of the first pictures I took as soon as I bought my macro lense. It was a spur of the moment shot but later after I viewed it on the computer I loved the curious connection my three year old daughter had with this fuzzy caterpillar.
Now that I know a little more about my camera I would like to play with this composition next summer when the caterpillars are back.I like the DOF and how the observer is blurred out but still obvious, giving all the attention to the caterpillar.
Camerea info is: Hand held (Next I will use a tripod for sure), 1/125sec, F5.6, Canon 100mm Macro, ISO 400. There seems to be BG noise, too distracting?
The caterpillar is a tent caterpillar Malacosoma species.
I hope I didn't violate any rules of this forum by using a person as a subject element as the BG. Thanks for looking and C&C Welcomed.

I'd say increase shutter speed and also the DOF a bit (I still expect the bg to stay nice and blurry, because macro lenses should do that); and do remember that you can increase DOF without stopping down by backing off a little. Or, perhaps better still, place your daughter's hand on something solid for support; you can frame so that the support isn't in view. I really hope we'll see more of these next summer!
Thanks for the gallery pointer Mike, I didn't know that
Thanks everyone for wishing me good luck with my new lense, however when I said this was one of the first picture I took with my new lense I forget to mention it was last years picture.
Gary- It's not an IS, I don't think IS was available with this lense last spring (2008) when I purchased it. It's a Canon 100mm macro 2.8 USM. Your right about enjoying it, I'm having a blast.
