Hi Paul - I really like this image. The fog and layers add an interesting depth. What looks to be a larger clump of grass near the bottom and center of the image is a little distracting for me because it is not uniform with the rest of the grasses. A small crop from the bottom, maybe? Thank you for sharing.

Hi Paul,
A 30 sec Photoshop on the aforementioned spot and put it on the wall.
Nice work!

Stunning image, Paul ! I love how the various layers of the landscape create a very moody environment, the fog is a great addition. Great comp, placement of the buck. I wonder how a pano might have looked. :toast:

Mood in the image is simply sublime! Light is gorgeous and the buck's looks rivets me to the frame. Beautiful image Paul!!

Hi Paul, I really like the composition here with all those layers and details in the BG. Despite the small size, the buck is still a focal point, which makes it a strong animalscape. I do agree with a small crop from the bottom to get rid of that distraction.
Further I find the image to have this typical, bit overdone, let me call it, ‘HDR-look’. I do not know whether you did some form of HDR processing on this, but that is just how it looks to me. I am not too fond of that look and really wonder how this came out in-camera.

Thanks guys, good call on the spot. I will take care of that.

Vincent, funny you mention processing because not much was done to this, I warmed the highlights and put some contrast in the foreground for depth and that was about it. Im interested in what gives it that look to your eye, because I really don't like 99% of the hdr's I see.

Fantastic animalscape Paul, love the feeling of depth created by all the different layers! Altough I know what he means with the HDR look (like you I dislike 99% of those images) I really do not see that here.

I don't think it looks like an HDR, but I do agree that it looks like something's not right. Maybe it's because you'd expect the brightest areas to be brighter in these circumstances? Overall I find the image very pleasing; the colors, the layers, the mist and the placement of the subject. I agree that cropping a sliver off the bottom will help. Well done.

Beautiful dreamy scene Paul, this would be nice even without the buck. Great capture!

Hi Paul,

This is what my mind conjures up when I think of the perfect example of an "animalscape" - a landscape strong enough to stand (and stand out) alone, but with the added visual element of an animal in it (in perfect harmony and balance with the other visual elements in the image). Superb!

Cheers...thanks for sharing this - it's real nice on the eyes...

I like that the deer is looking away, enjoying the same landscape we are. Very beautiful pastoral scene. :toast:

Simply love the layered composition & dreamy landscape !
I wonder how it would look if you tone down the high tones.

Thanks again guys, and for clearing up what looks off. I guess the fog and atmosphere really helped compress the tonal range.

Thanks again everyone, here is a quick edit. I darkened the shadows to help with the hdr look and took care of the dark spot.

Paul, most of us will know you as a great landscape photographer and your landscape skills are also often clear in your posts in the Fauna Gallery with ‘animalscape’ style images. This image is great even without the buck. The inclusion of the buck however, makes it really come to live. Congrats Paul. :toast:
