Black-Capped Chickadee

I took this picture last winter while I was trying out a new lense.
Taken late afternoon and that's about all I can recall.
Canon XT, AV Priority set @F5.6, Exposure +1/3, Canon 70-300 lense @240mm. Photo cropped approx. 50%.
Thanks and any C&C welcomed.

John, chickadee are a hard bird to photograph because of their black head. I have trouble with getting their eye to show. You have done a great job here. I would suggest to clone out the branch on the left hand side. You have no use for it and it distracts from the photograph. :toast:

Agree with Carlette about stick on left. The bird would benefit from some more sharpening. Nicely done!

Nice pose you've captured here John, like the fine feather detail, though another pass of USM would bring the detail out a little better. The blacks appear slightly blocked up, you may be able to play with the raw conversion to see if you can't get some feather detail showing there.

Thanks every one for your suggestions. I don't know to much about post processing. The only processing software I have is what came with my camera which is Zoombrowser and Digital Photo Professional. I think it can do most of the basics, so this photo will give me somthing to practice with.

Chris-USM?? I'm somewhat new at this and not sure what it means, I'm thinking Unsharp Mask? If so, I agree. The closer I've been looking at my photos I've noticed they need to be sharpened up abit. I'm starting to do it now with most pictures when I convert the image from RAW. Thanks again.

John,

I like the cute pose you captured for this chickadee, the soft, neutral background and the dash of color the red twig the bird is perched on gives the image.

As noted, the bird is a bit soft and some selective sharpening of the bird & twig would give the image more impact. USM does mean Unsharp Mask FYI.

I like the overall feel of this image. A wonderful BG. I agree with the need for a bit more sharpening.
