Tawny coster

Winter in India has begun. I can see subtle changes in the temperature. When ever there is onset of winter, I make a trip to the back waters of a reservoir near my place simply because of the fact that I can photograph some beautiful butterflies with dew.

This is an image that made last week. A close portrait of this beautiful Tawny coster (Acraea terpsicore) butterfly. Composed it in a way that the subject is significantly back lit. Also used a white torch light to bring out the details on the shadow region and a bit of light on the 'complex eyes'. I placed the torch light in an angular fashion so as to get more reflections off the dew drops.

Tech specs:
Canon 40D, Canon 100 F2.8 Macro, ISO 250, F4.5, 1/500s, gitzo tripod, Arca swiss z1 ball head, mild led torch light (white light).

Thanks for looking. Love to know your views.

Excellent details and background. The lighting is fantastic. The light area in the upper right of the frame does draw my eye away, but not by much. Well done. :toast:

This goes on the top of my list for the morning. I like the fragile stem and the backlit petals with the dew drops. For my taste that alone would make a great close-up shot, add the butterfly with the detail in the dewy wings and it becomes a keeper for sure.

Thats the kind of light us photogs dream of. The detail and composition are excellent. A touch more DOF could have helped I think

Beautiful image Pramod. I like how the tones of the butterfly and flower are complimented by the color of the background. Your lighting technique really worked well highlighting the dew.

Pramod: I went on a hunt for dew covered butterflies myself this morning and came up with nothing. This is a superbly crafted image, especially the lighting. Magnificent subject as well. 2 thumbs up! >=))>

Beautiful subject and BG. I'd prefer that the strands of spider web be cloned out.
Congrats on the EP!
