Forest Light

I'd appreciate any and all feedback on this. On an early morning run the fog started rising from the valleys below just as the sun rose. All I had on hand was a 400mm lens and had to bump up the iso to 800 to get a sharp enough image (no tripod). I played off of the graininess of the iso in post-processing by sharpening the noise with the rest of the image.
Canon 40D, 400mm, 1/400, f5.6, iso800. Slightly cropped off the right and bottom

very nice capture. love the way the rays pass threw the image and the warm tones you got here. the grain works fine, imo. nicely done.

Clever. The golden light and processing make this really unique.

The light and diagonal lines work to make a strong image.

Wonderful drama here and the diagonal shafts of light are spectacular, Greg.

Nice capture. Good job at using the grain to your advantage, which enhances the fog.

I think this works well. I notice the grain -- and that's how it appears on my screen, not so much like noise -- and I'm kind of on the fence about it. On the one hand, I think it gives the image a nice tactile feel and probably helps bring out some additional definition in the trees on the LHS. On the other, I also think it may take a bit away from the softness of the fog (often so pleasing in images of this sort). But I probably would just keep it as-is if it were mine and be happy with the result.

The mist is a little "gritty." Ah, I just read your description. I think the light is absolutely beautiful. I've never cared for digital "grain." If it looks less pixelly in a print, I'd say no problem.

Love the light and colors, not sure how bad the noise will affect this if printed larger, but looks nice at this size..

Really like the diagonals of the light through the fog and the backlight on the trees. Well done.

The shafts of light and golden color make this very nice. I also like the intimate comp, well done.

Greg,

Excellent choice in accentuating the noise and "graniness" of the scene - I think it makes a big difference in the presentation of this image. My only suggestion would be some light painting with TK's burn/dodge layer and brighten the highlights. I'm wondering if that would also help showcase the rays of light. Even without any changes I think this is a great capture.

Thanks for the feedback. Had a feeling the graininess could go either way, and like you Kevin do wonder how it would print. Perhaps on the right paper, I'm thinking canvas because that might help with the painterly look.

Lon, great processing idea that I'm going to have to work on.

Beautiful light and color, and a bit mysterious.

Hi Greg :wavey: A very fine capture of light and color. In my view, the graininess does not affect this kind of image.
