Nice work. It looks muddy and cold. The rolling snowcaps in the deep background really make this picture for me. My only suggestion would be to clone or crop out that half cut off cotton grass pedal in the lower center foreground. I checked out your Alaska pics on your site - they look great. I really like the Bridge to Nowhere shot and the Autumn Reflections. Excellent work!

A beautiful shot, Doug. I like the way you've composed the cotton grass heads in the frame with the whites and browns reflected in the mountains and snow. Nice DOF too.

Doug,
You've been around.
I went to your site. How's business? FYI I couldn't access your site without copy/insert. Clicking on the portion you submitted did not work on my computer--who knows why???
If you don't mind, how many of your shots are "composites"?
I've been to AK 9 times. Last time in 2006. I took a small digital during that visit which was north of the Brooks Range. I now have much better equipment and look forward to the next trip.
I also like the "Bridge to Nowhere".
The shot here has good composition with the Cotton Grass pulling the eye to the mountain. Knowing AK the rest of the colors are real. Glad you didn't try to make something that's not there in this shot.
Nice captures.

Thanks Larry. I appreciate you pointing out the error in my link - I fixed it. On my website, about 40% of the images are manual blends of separate exposures. I don't use ND grads. I don't like to call them composites, because, for me, this implies combining components of images from different scenes, which I almost never do.

Doug, another beautiful image. The cotton grass certainly does draw your eye in. Best Regards.

a fine image, doug. I like the way you framed this one. the fg creates a nice tension with that left mountain. larger version is great. nicely seen and done.

So that's what Skolai looks like!
Great shot, Doug--terrific series! One nit--the cloud (contrail?) at top is a bit distracting.

I like everything but that one lone cloud/contrail. The "cotton" is intriguing ... almost seems to be waving in the wind, although it's obviously still.

Hey Doug,
Cotton grass is so cool .... always a nice foreground. I think I'd like this a tad tighter, but the looser crop adds to the feeling of vastness.
I suppose technically we should call this area Chitistone Pass, although we were actually a little south of the pass itself. Goes to show the silliness of naming places like this too closely, I guess.
Did you get something usable from the first morning, when the light was a little warmer (right after the D2x debacle)?
Cheers
Carl

Really nice work! I love the foreground, here. Those white tops add a wonderful point of interest. I like your choice of soft, muted color... and the light on the mountains is very nice. This is one of many locations I'd like to visit in Alaska - when I get there someday. Well done!

I like the comp and depth of field in this. It feels very real. Nicely done. I guess I'd agree with cropping that little cotton that's partially cut off in the FG, but that's a tiny nit.
I would have recognized a lot of passes, but I had to look up Skolai Pass. That's way off the beaten path...

Sometimes even if I initially like a first edit, I will play around with it a bit. This is a modified version with the image warmed up a bit a slightly tighter crop, and a tiny bit of cloning of a left over piece of cotton grass bloom and the 'errant' cloud

Wonderful image. I love the large version and the way the cotton grass just leads you in. My only nit is the contrail at the top of the picture. Perhaps you could clone that out.
