Hello David.
Lovely capture with a super background, and like the way you have caught the light on the bird.

Dave,
Good to see another one of your Iceland posts!
I like the Wagtails pose, the nice texture and colors of the rock it is perched on including those orange lichens. You have a sweet headturn and beautiful light in the eyes, your exposure for the whites & darks worked very well.
The only thing I may have done was to go to perhaps f8 to get the tail more in focus given that you had plenty of shutter speed, but I don't mind the tail the way it is either.
This is a beautiful and fascinating species that I would love to see.
A fine image as posted.

Excellent background Dave and I like the perch with lichens too. The bird is sharp where it matters most. Nice pose also. Great job getting this wagtail full frame at 510 mm. You've posted some excellent images from this trip and this is another one.

I like the image as posted - very nice detail and excellent exposure. I'd love to have a shot of one. I've only seen one and that was on a quick business trip to the Netherlands years ago with no camera gear.

Sweet capture, David. Great background and light. I very much like the way you framed the wagtail, despite the head being at the center. The rock perch adds lots of interest to the image. I too think you could have gone with a little more DOF, but this is a fine image as is.
Thanks for sharing this.

Thanks for the comments. I agree about more DOF. Guess I need to go back to Iceland and try again.
I vividly remember this shot. I was set up to shoot a Ringed Plover on a more distant rock, when the Wagtail landed on a much closer rock. I took a few shots, but by the time I thought about changing aperture, the bird was on a different rock in the shadows. Do these adjustments ever become automatic?

Dave,
Rich calls that "muscle memory" and it does seem to become instinctual, it has for me.

Lovely work, David. This is a skittish species, based upon my experience, and getting it full frame with your rig speaks well for your skills. Good work on the blacks and whites, too.

Really striking bird! Nice job isolating the bird from the background, looks like some very deft sharpening on the bird. A fine perch, depending on what the rest of the rock looks like, showing a bit more of it and having the bird higher in the frame would be interesting to see.

Good image, David. Love the light, it really brings out the dimensional effect.
BTW, have you seen any waders up Pensacola way yet?

I like the way the bird stands out against that superb background. DOF is fine by me. I might crop a little from the right though.
