EPA 2009 - Second Honorable Mention - Environmental Photojournalism Gallery

Hello there,

Every year at Summer is the same thing. Fires, fires and more fires. Arsonists, economic interests, poorly deforestation, ignorance, etc etc.

Last friday a huge fire burned almost 90 hectares in Belas, Portugal. I never been on a harsh environment like that, its horrifying to see death pairing in the air :frown:

man, you just pushed yourself and your work further with this shot. great work, paulo. we can feel the atmosphere described just looking to the image. even the framing is amazing. regarding the fire, it´s allways the same shit, earth looses, we loose, but there are some that win. the cause of this one is another in many fires that happen around, everywhere, doubts about it´s origine, right paulo? great image. chapa 10!

this is an amazing shot Paulo... NG caliber! Of course, as an ecologist I recognize that fire is often an essential ecological process... granted not all are beneficial but so many of our threatened and endangered species depend on fire and its wise re-introduction to our man-altered environment, that I cringe a bit when fire is painted as something evil... sorry for soap-boxing, but I wrestle with these misperceptions all the time...

Thanks Reed, i could agree with you and i think its essential, but last year on the same month, to be more precise, 1 year and 6 days ago, there was a fire on the same place but with less damage the the forest. More funny and intriguing was the fact that not to far from where i was standing there is luxury golf club...

Paulo,
I think you did a great job capturing the mood here. I love the lone tree in the foreground, and this just would not tell such a powerful story without the chopper in the sky. I might consider a very slight crop from the sky and the right side to place more attention on the fg tree and chopper. Great job technically and artistically!

Excellent work, Paulo. The overall darkness of the image provides drama and message, and the lone foreground tree punctuates the scene with a stark, skeletal exclamation point. The tiny helicopter with its water dropper amid the huge sweep of the landscape adds humility to the scene.

As depressing as this shot is, I love it. I cannot imagine what you must have been feeling while witnessing such a tragic scene.

Same thing here in California. Excellent portrayal of the damage, and helicopter adds a super touch. I don't know about portugal, but the reason the fires here are so bad is because we never let them burn... the ecosystem needs to burn, and when we prevent that, it just builds up until eventually, one way or another, it all goes up in flames.

wow, this photo is stunning, excellent at conveying the destruction.

Do you know if the fires are also possibly linked to too much water used for irrigation? I read something recently in the Guardian newspaper about some fires in Spain originating in dried out peat underground due to illegal boreholes being sunk.
Best regards
Matt

Congrats on the EPA, Paulo. Sad image, though. It's difficult to find the "good light" in this type of landscape. You did well.

Wildfires are always such a hard topic to portray. I know, I lost my first home to one 10 years ago in a wildfire started as a prescribed burn. Fires are a necessary part of nature but oh the damage they can render even when one is trying to do good. I think your image speaks volumes and I am glad you received an EPA. I am sorry I didn't see this posting sooner.

Paulo,
Congratulations on the EPA. I hope that in the future you will be able to return to this sight and capture the hope and joy in the renewal of life that follows fires.
