Land Of Ice w/repost
by Karsten Wrobel
From what I read, the ice blocks washed up on this beach in Southern Iceland have reached the end of a 1000 year journey... puts time in perspective somehow...
Getting this shot was a lot of fun. The sea was quite rough and I found myself - mounted tripod in hand - running towards the small piece of ice in the fg as soon as the water was about to recede back into the sea hoping to capture some water streaks across the black sand... (as well as running away from the next wave that approached... ;-)
Thanks for your c&c.

41 commentsHow big is the FG piece of ice? I can't tell if its exaggerated by the wide angle or not. I'm assuming some of the ice chunks would float and shift around with each new barrage of waves? This photo makes me want to go there and see for myself.
Very magical... Giant diamonds on the beach. Lovely colors and contrast.

can almost feel the wind and ocean spray in my face.
the streaks from the surf add a nice touch.
Is this the beach at "Jokulsarlon" by the glacial lagoon ?
Joe.
Really nice leading lines, streaks, and subject placement. A beautiful image. Two small modifications I think you could do to clean it up are: clone out/remove the two black pebbles in the lower left hand corner of the foreground. Also, I would look at coming down 1/2 inch on the sky at the top of your image. I think cropping some of the sky would even focus your image more and make it more dramatic as well. Thanks so much for sharing this is just wonderful. Michael
Here is a repost where I have slightly corrected the horizon tilt (as per Steve's comment I am uncertain about the horizon with wave action, but do find the repost looks straighter) and further darkened the sky (thanks for that thought, Tony) and the mg iceblocks to make them stand out a bit more.
Stan, converting this to b/w was my first thought, but I ended up finding the blues much more powerful.
Aaron, the fg chunk of ice must be about 15-20 inches wide... the substantially bigger ice blocks in the mg are shifting in the waves (exposure time here was 3,2s)
Anthony, I tried different angles, but this is the shot with the best water streaks
Christian, yes this is the beach next to Jökulsarlon
Fantastic image! I love the tones and textures and the compositional balance between shapes, negative and positive space- really well done! The glistening ice looks so real, I feel like I can touch it through my monitor. Another gem for your amazing travel portfolio!

I think this is an amazing photograph. Although I suppose it's not the first ice on a beach image we've seen, this one certainly ranks as one of the best I've ever seen. The glow of the main chunk is incredible, I'm sure helped by the excellent processing of this image. The streaks of water, the dark sand, the surf, the sky... all work beautifully together for an outstanding image. Wow, great work!

Very nice work on the repost, too; the sky and mg are much more complimentary to the fg drama.
Oh, my word!
