Impression of a Dahlia

EPA 2009 - Second Honorable Mention - Flora Gallery

One of my favorite places to photograph Dahlias, is the Swan Island Dahlia farm in Canby, Oregon. Saturday morning offered the best conditions with light overcast sky and absolutely no wind. Plus, I had the place to myself most of the morning. This image was shot with a Canon 1Ds III and 85mm f/1.2. 1/200 sec @ f/1.2. The farm is open to the public through the Labor Day weekend when they'll have their annual Dahlia festival.

Comments and critiques appreciated.

Spectacular dahlia image David. Great comp and the dof that creates the sense of motion is superb as are the colors. Beautiful work.

The second Dahlia image I see posted here today and spectacular in a different way. I like the off center heart and the colors and softness which creates the muted shadows. Enjoy looking at the very selective dof from the wide open apeture selection which creates a very "dreamy" image.

Very impressive image, David ( that's not meant to be a play on words !! ). Love the vibrancy and dynamism of the petals and the soft lighting. If I have a nit it would be a wish to see just a touch more below the centre - but it's great as is.

Gotta love that place. I cant believe you got no wind, that's pretty rare for the Dahlia farm. Evenings can be pretty nice out there too.

Well...I LOVE what you got going on here. The comp, dof, colors, softness...its gorgeous! Good to see an image from you! :toast:

Congratulations on the EPA. The amazing selective focus, with repeated circles of petal tips in rings, makes for a dynamic radial composition.
